The conch is the oldest known shell instrument in the world, and this is what it sounds like. Tosello and his colleagues hope to build on the visceral experience of hearing this ancient instrument by arranging a recital in the cave where it was discovered all those decades ago. In many indigenous cultures, conch shells provide a source of food as well as the raw material for making musical instruments.
